  • @Dallas i'm glad to see so many scores on your list!

I've been a long-time disasterpeace fan, and his work on it follows was a breakthrough i feel.

junkie xl really came through for mad max, too. much more satisfying than zimmer's (and the rest of his acolytes working today) recent output imo.

I have a hard time branching out and digesting large amounts of music. Once I find something I really like, I tend to obsess and try to hear every last detail of a single release. Colored Sands is still a perfect example of that, it's a pinnacle of musical achievement for me.

    Imperial Triumphant - Abyssal Gods
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
Sulphur Aeon - Gateway to the Antisphere
    Alkaloid - The Malkuth Grimoire
    Disasterpeace - It Follows
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 'Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress'
Junkie XL - Mad Max: Fury Road
    John Carpenter - Lost Themes
    Loscil - For Greta
  • Disasterpeace did the Fez soundtrack? Maybe I need to check this out.
  • As intros to their work for me, I'm a fan. Also, I totally see Junkie XL as a Zimmer-style scorer, but better than a lot of Zimmer's work. Having said that, I thought his Interstellar score was his best in a while.
  • is it chiptune type stuff like the Fez soundtrack?
  • edited July 2015
@Kyle it depends on the era. His early chiptune is much more rock-based, and as he progresses he's moved away from that somewhat, although Rise of the Obsidian Interstellar is very much a chiptune prog rock album and is worth a listen. I like Atebite and the Warring Nations a lot too.

@Dallas agreed, Interstellar's score was his best in a while. I also loved his Inception score (especially Time). Most people think he pioneered the Horn of Doom™ that we hear so much in film scores now, but it was first used in the district 9 trailer score which came out before inception, so who really knows?
  • I'm with you on those two scores, for sure.
  • what other Disasterpeace should I listen to besides the It Follows soundtrack (which I already have)
  • Rise of the Obsidian Interstellar is cool so far
  • Atebite and the Warring Nations, Level, and Neutralite are pretty fun records, Atebite being my favorite of those three.
  • Also, if you like proggy chiptune, check out C-Jeff: http://c-jeff.com/album/preschtale

Kamasi Washington is definitely going to be loved but I don't really know what to rate it or where to place it quite yet. It's kind of a lot of music
  • I think that's my main qualm with Kamasi.

I enjoy it, but it'd be so much better if it were streamlined and more focused.

I don't really get what he's trying to accomplish with all that music, seems excessive.

Good list, @existence . I need to listen to that Sufjan album some more. Haven't listened to Envy or Tame Impala at all yet. That Leviathan album has been 1 of only 2 metal albums I have thoroughly enjoyed this year (the other being A Forest of Stars) and I've listened to quite a bit
  • Currents would be a decent 9 if it had a little more sonic variety and bite. I'd give it a decent 8 at the moment but it's growing on me
  • it's definitely not growing on me.

It's just staying in the same place.
