  • There's good stuff, just gotta look a little harder than usual. @TTK I super approve of that top 4.
  • yeah it's weird, the lack of really big event records so far this year has made me turn to the avant side of music recently.

It's a side which I don't often visit, but the time which I have allowed myself to visit it has made me more appreciative of it.

  • I can't stop listening to Dopplereffekt's Cellular Automata and Talaboman
  • I enjoyed both of those, didn't get addicted though.
  • absolutely adore the new rokefiefen's 'the falafel fallen' really strong effort from the guys there.
  • Colonyyyyyy
  • updated to include Roc Marciano and A7PHA, also reordered a little
  • what is rokefiefen? person or group?

google's not finding it for me
  • nah they're a iftar spinoff group based out of tahini. bobo doner bill is prob the most prominent member in the group you should check out his early stuff with spider monkey those guys rly hit it.
  • If you really look into the trajectory of their albums in a sonic progression than i think this is the most comfortable I've ever felt with a rokefiefen album theres literally nothing sonically unsound with the wiesen moments.
  • damn haven't heard that name in a long time

fam used to jam out to rokefiefen for hours in the bathroom at high school until some clomboy outed me. agreed that the new rokefiefen leaves nothing unpronounced/10, especially ganoush where everything drops into the mix and this giant fork shaped thing rises and starts panning like crazy.

I honestly think they're taking the piss Yama, just enjoy the banter.

like seriously; "the first time they came into town cumin coriander played the drums with a scallion"?
  • "An iftar spinoff group based out of tahini."

  • The new Feist is taking me back to my only true heartbreak all over again...And I can't stop listening
  • @TTK hehe i'll take your word for it.

i'm still looking for "gullible" on the ceiling
  • so... forest swords might be my favorite record of the year. stunning stuff.
  • I gave it a cursory listen inside my car, but didn't really absorb much. Liked what I heard, but honestly need to listen some more.
  • ok so i still prefer damn and narkopop, but compassion is a solid #3
  • edited May 2017
Forest Swords songs still feel underwritten to me, and the production doesn't give enough to make up for it.

all right, here goes my first shot at 2017. had a slow first few months but has been absolutely incredible ever since. i love this year. the new slowdive is aging like a fine wine; forest swords has wowed me yet again; mac demarco's new record might be my absolute favorite of his; kendrick of course delivered hugely once again; gas had an immense come back record; and on and on...

    albums:
    1. gas - narkopop - 9.2
    2. kendrick - DAMN. - 9.1
    3. forest swords - compassion - 9.0
    4. sufjan stevens - carrie and lowell live - 9.0
    5. slowdive - s/t - 8.8
    6. the caretaker - everywhere at the end of time stage 2 - 8.7
    7. mac demarco - this old dog - 8.6
    8. kelly lee owens - s/t - 8.5
    9. sampha - process - 8.3
    10. spoon - hot thoughts - 8.1

    EPs:
    1. animal collective - meeting of the waters - 9.1

    need to listen (more):
mount eerie - a crow looked at me (still not ready)
    perfume genius - no shape
    blanck mass - world eater
magnetic fields - 50 song memoir
    arca - s/t
    xiu xiu - forget
    feist - pleasure
jens lekman - life will see you now
jonwayne - rap album two (i ADORE "afraid of us")
    actress - AZD
    thundercat - drunk
    neil cicierega - mouth moods
    david bowie - no plan
a heck of a lot of hip hop from the hip hop thread
  • Revisited that Animal Collective EP and it really grew on me. Definitely a step in the right direction, gives me hope for future records. Sounds like it could have been recorded in 2003-2004 era.
