  • I haven't updated my list in a while but I have plenty of albums above Crack-Up
  • i is for real. tyler's album is just... really doing it for me. the performance at panorama may have bumped him ahead, i admit... but i'm seeing fleet foxes tomorrow, so the order might switch again. as of right now, though, i think they're basically equally great for entirely different reasons.

yknow what Geo I might almost be there with you as Flower Boy being #1.

I've just been listening to it endlessly, and it gives me so much joy. I relate to the lyrics a lot as well, whether they're obvious
"I can't even lie I've been lonely as fuck"

    or a little more metaphorical;
    "All my friends lost
    They couldn't read the signs
I didn't wanna talk and tell 'em my location
    And they ain't wanna walk"

"Fuck it, I seen some familiar stuck in the cul-de-sac
I pull up, get out, what up? I wanna help
But what you want for some, some niggas really don't want for themself
Now do I stay? Do I go? That's my dilemma
And traffic is picking up, if I don't leave I'ma get stuck"

But this record is so weirdly empowering for me, it never feels like Tyler's actually trying to up lift anyone, but he has these little things through out like mentioning a person's "November" or "Find some time to do something" or just being emotionally naked and candid with the song titles and lyrics,
As I get further on I'm also enjoying the flow of the record more, like how November's last verse is talking about Glitter, and how he wants to show it to the person it's about.
And of course the "all my day 1's turn to 3 4's after track 7" line,
You have like Garden Shed seguing into Boredom without any break, and tracks having extended intros and outros to musically make sense and change keys between tracks.

For me I just connect with so many aspects of the music, the melodies, the jazziness of it, the lyrics, and the want to just express oneself, but almost not knowing how to.

And this is a little obscure side line thing, but I don't know if it's been said (I checked Genius and it wasn't there) but on Foreword Tyler says:
"How much cooler can I get until I run out of fans?
How many fans can I have until I turn on the AC?
If the AC blows, well then I'm TNT, I'm gone"

now I don't know how long its been since Tyler has called himself Ace Creator, but you think AC could refer to that former pseudonym? "Turn on the Ace Creator", like he gets so popular he turns on himself in a way, like he doesn't deserve it.
Might be a stretch, but I was thinking that and thought "huh, it might be a cool little extra layer of meaning there"
  • thanks for those thoughts, nick. it's bringing me a ton of joy as well; my listen yesterday was as good as ever. naked and honest emotionally, colorful and smooth musically. the melodies/hooks on this thing cannot be overstated.

your analysis reminded me i still need to read the lyrics while listening soon. there's a lot more for this record to give me, and it already feels like it's given so much.
  • I still stand by my original analysis of the album despite absolutely loving some of the beats on it. I implore more people to listen to the Mike album.
  • Best songs of 2017 ongoing kind-of-in-order-but-not-really list:

Carly Rae Jepsen - "Cut to the Feeling"
Fleet Foxes - "Third of May"
    BROCKHAMPTON - "JUNKY"
    Converge - "Eve"
Billy Woods - "Police Came to My Show"
    Boris - "Memento Mori"
    Kendrick Lamar - "Feel"
Calvin Harris ft. Frank Ocean & Migos - "Slide"
    Tyler, the Creator - "Boredom"
    Blanck Mass - "Rhesus Negative"
    Paramore - "Forgiveness"
    Grizzly Bear - "Aquarian"
    Gas - "Narkopop 8"
    J.I.D - "Never"
    Migos - "T-Shirt"
    Charli XCX - "ily2"
    Sampha - "Timmy's Prayer"
    Brand New - "Same Logic/Teeth"
    Roc Marciano - "Rosebudd's Revenge"
Joey Bada$$ ft. Schoolboy Q - "Rockabye Baby"
    Vince Staples - "Yeah Right"

NOTE: yes, no songs from the Mount Eerie album are on here even though it's practically a lock for my AOTY. Can't bring myself to extract any one song as representative of that album

wow, nick is absolutely right about the paucity of outstanding debuts this year. only four on my list are debuts. but i think this year has been pretty darn great so far.
  • the new album in the Caretaker series is also out,

    it's not a fun listen
  • In the good way or the bad way?
  • in a good way.
  • edited October 2017
This one's so much better if you keep the concept behind it in your mind as you listen to it. The others too, but especially this one.
Stage 3 Here we are presented with some of the last coherent memories before confusion fully rolls in and the grey mists form and fade away. Finest moments have been remembered, the musical flow in places is more confused and tangled. As we progress some singular memories become more disturbed, isolated, broken and distant. These are the last embers of awareness before we enter the post awareness stages.
  • Some people I know actually dislike the idea of this series.

Like it's turning dementia into a novelty.
  • Wait can someone explain to me what the series is? I've actually not listened to The Caretaker
  • The guy behind the Caretaker's idea of the project "has been characterised as exploring memory, nostalgia, and melancholia", so his usual wheel house is sampled pre war jazz and ballroom, often treated and looped to create this warm, nostalgic yet kinda eerie feeling. It's a way of working which feels as much an art project as it is music, because there's not that much in the way of original material.

The new series of records, the third of which has been released, will be the last under the moniker.
The guy behind it has officially stated that he's giving the project "dementia", so the series of records as they progress will fall deeper into it, and will be recycling motifs and ideas from previous records. The new one actually has quite a few reused cuts from his break out release of 2011, just treated differently.

    he's expressed himself a little more eloquently at the bottom of his bandcamp page;
    https://thecaretaker.bandcamp.com/album/everywhere-at-the-end-of-time

I don't know what the final one is gonna sound like. I'm going to guess it will just be muffled, eerie, reverbed ghosts of memories, static and sadness.
  • It's an interesting concept, if kinda self-indulgent. What albums of this fellow are worth listening to?
  • I really enjoy An Empty Bliss Beyond This World,

I haven't heard much of that outside of that and the new series, which isn't that different, just applies the aforementioned concept.

  • ^ this is one of my all-time favorite records.
  • One of the best tracks on the album is a remix of a track from An Empty Bliss Beyond This World called Libet's Delay
  • fuck yeah, stoked to hear
