AHOTI's Best Albums of 2017

edited June 20 in General
hello, everyone! it's that time of year... when we make a list that will almost certainly be superior to any publication's! because that's how great you all are. please post your top 10 of the year (and only ten), ranked. if you don't rank it, i will consider the order in which you listed it the rank. the scoring will go as follows:

-13 points for 1st place
-11 for 2nd
-9 for 3rd
-7 for 4th
-6, 5, 4, etc. for the rest

the rationale behind this scoring system is to give greater weight to your top 3, since these will likely be your most-listened and have the most consideration put into their placement (the difference between 5th and 8th isn't as significant as between 1st and 4th).

please post your list in text form, as it makes things a lot easier for entry. it would really help if you posted your list in this thread, not just the loved list thread, but i will still go through that and try to find stragglers for those who haven't seen this post. you may edit your list here as much as you want up until the closing time.

you have until 11:59pm EST on january 5th to submit your lists, at which point i will close the voting & calculate the totals. happy voting!

shout out to world eater, ome and yaeji
  • Glad to at least get some tangential love for World Eater, thought I was more or less alone with that one
  • it's somewhere between 10 and 15 for me if i were to extend that list
  • edited January 2018
I didn't put Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me on my list because I don't think of it as an album. It would be in the top 3 of my list, I might edit it in there at some point.
  • It is an album though... I don’t really know what you mean by that
  • edited January 2018
I suppose it's an apophasis. The opening of the albums tells us

And it's not for singing about
It's not for making into art

and yet, here we are with an album. Of course it's an album, but I guess I mean it doesn't feel like a public piece of art that I should be hearing. It feels voyeuristic to me.

and as I read that it sounds ridiculous. Of course a weighty, honest and personal piece of art can be consumed by others, that emotional resonance is what makes it good art.
  • This was also my first Mount Eerie album, so I don't have a lot of background on Phil or his discography.
  • It sounds like nothing else in his discography as Mount Eerie or Microphones.

No I would say it certainly has musical similarities to Dawn
  • edited January 2018
Dawn is more underrated than the bones in ur body u need but don’t ever appreciate
  • edited January 2018
Dawn let me skip past bright eyes no hassle
