  • DJ Koze is my album of the year so far. Iceage is also fantastic, I love watching their trajectory.
  • listened to knock knock on my walk today and it was fucking awesome. knew he would deliver, maybe my aotysf as well
  • Listened to the new Beach House in HQ last night and holy shit, not what I was expecting. It still sounds like them but they also sound like a new band at the same time. A completely fantastic experience. I will have to listen more, but I imagine it is among their best. This may end up dethroning DJ Koze for me.
  • Yeah I’ve heard it’s their best since Teen Dream. Stoked to hear it because their last few have underwhelmed me.
  • It’s great. It’s early, but after two listens I’d go so far as to say it may be their best.
  • weirdly i am underwhelmed by 7; the singles are still the high points for me. only have listened twice, so my opinion could change. a lot of the melodies/lyrics felt rote to me, and the lcd soundsystem-patented “build a song up one piece at a time” approach for a number of songs felt a little flat. for now i think depression cherry is better

    Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!

woo Manatee, that Mary Lattimore record is quite beautiful. Like Joanna Newsom meeting with Stars of the Lid, or Suzanne Kraft or someone like that.
  • also it's weird how much that Arctic Monkeys record has grown on me,

Its left turn to loungey psyche pop is so ballsy. The sound is retro futuristic but not nostalgic because it's not like trying to remember the good times. There's not really that many hooks, only three of four tracks have any solid memorable hooks, the other tracks like Batphone, One Point Perspective or Science Fiction just feel like exercises in experimentation in instrumentation and odd lyricism.
Speaking of, the verbal word soup that Alex Turner espouses through out the record sounds like an old lonely man who got rich and famous early in his life but then lost all his friends, and now sits in his mansion at his piano just talking to himself.

At one point he even says "Bare with me, I lost my train of thought". His ramblings wouldn't fit on any other sort of record, but with the lavish and ghostly jazzy instrumentation it just adds to the mood, the camp, the humour, and the loneliness.

I think it's a great record, and if you're at all morbidly curious, give it a go.
