I thought Mark Harris was astute at why nominations are so schizophrenic for the past few years--how they are a mix of populist and art house fair now more than any other recent time. https://www.vulture.com/2019/01/what-the-2019-oscar-nom…
I have stuff I need to listen to (for the first time...) but here is my top 20 for now:
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Kanye West - Late Registration
The National - Alligator
Gorillaz - Demon Days
The Decemberists - Picaresque
My Morning Jacket - Z
That’s really funny—I have Head-On via Netflix DVD on my side table ready to watch in the next couple of days. It’s for my Aughts-a-thon I’m doing (https://letterboxd.com/dallashaldune/tag/aughts-a-thon/diary/).
I’ll keep your criticism in mind, @D…
Bird Box is the lamest film of 2018. That's the biggest criticism I can come up with--it never sells me on its concept like A Quiet Place did (not a great film, but an entertaining one.)
I didn't see Vox Lux. Did you, @Des?
Oh man, I think it's pretty great. The amount of emotional maturity to that film, with its incredibly earned pseudo-tragic ending, is pretty incredible. Also, it features Ben Foster's best performance by far.
